A New RV Design Challenge

A not so long time ago but it sure seems like years, I came to a realization that I will have to plan for my eventual retirement. After spending almost 30 years as an engineer working for an aerospace company, I’m so comfortable with my routine that I did not have a solid plan for what to do with my time in my retirement years. Yes, I could do volunteer works and I am planning to do so, but that will not be all I would do. Travelling? Yes, definitely. In the past, I’ve rented a number of Class A, C RVs and travelled extensively in the West. My young family, back then, had really enjoyed that mode of travel. Fast forward to today. Although I am still able to navigate the bulky RVs, I’d rather be having something which allow for more flexibility since I will be staying in some places more and driving less. What I have envisioned is something which is more akin to a Tiny Home having full amenities of a second home, yet nimble and compact as a small travel trailer. Leveraging my years of engineering experience, this is what I’ve come up with.

Homestead Beige SL20-36

Here’s what I means by nimble and compact as a small travel trailer. Take a look at the other side of the RV.

Homestead Street Side SL18

The RV will have to double in size when parked. Hmm, this project will keep me busy for a long time. More details on the next post!

    1. Thank you for stopping by. I hope you will enjoy seeing the progress of my pet project as much as I do building it. The way I see it, this design is more of a tiny home than a traditional travel trailer although it has all the design characteristics of the travel trailer. I will provide the details as much as time will permit.

      1. hello again, hope your design is progressing. i was a fashion designer before retirement and have recently designed our new bathroom. so i am interested in designs of all types, and especially like tiny houses on wheels. they are very popular here in eugene. take care!

  2. Hi Bess,
Thank you for following along. I am a different kind of designer. I wish I have your sense of fashion design because I really appreciate the beauty of the design forms. In my previous career, I mostly did system design and integration for airplane black boxes. But like you, I am into any kind of designs. I guess we are of a curious type. For this project, I just wanted to see how far I can push the envelop of Tiny Home design. I don’t expect the first design to be perfect, however, the lessons learned will allow me to be better on the next one. I’ve been following RVSue and other full time RVers for a few years. I wanted to learn all the challenges that they are facing everyday so that I can come up with a better solution for Tiny Home designs.
